Artist Statement

My work explores the intersection between the natural world and human values. There is a tendency to disconnect and objectify the earth’s biosphere - to view it as a backdrop, rather than as something we are a part of.

I live on an island where relationships with ecosystems are magnified by human impact and I question the validity of some of our interactions. I am interested in elevating the unnoticed and invisible through concepts of impermanence and duality.

I currently employ the reductive or multi block processes of linoleum printing to build diverse layers of colour and textures within my works. I often use common and recognizable geometric shapes to act as a bridge and to leave space for viewer introspection.

I am attracted to the meditative qualities of hand carving in contrast with the mechanical act of printing. Together these methodologies unearth subtleties beyond what the eye can see and focus on interrelationships between components of the planet and our place within it.

My interest in perception is informed by the affiliation we have with our unconscious and how that relates to the physical world. Printmaking offers the capacity of dual perception and reversal through the mirror image, thus evoking curiosity and different ways of seeing.

The multiplicity of print media is a dynamic art form providing the role of communicator. My imagery is layered with information from past thoughts which act as metaphors for the way memory traces impose themselves on perception. Shapes and symbols can become portals to another dimension.

Through these channels my work embraces an interface with elements found in nature for which we have an affinity, and encompasses both historical and contemporary perspectives.

My inquiries center on environmental stewardship and how that might manifest, as I blur the boundaries between the natural world and human identity.
