Woodland Series
This series is based on ‘Shinrin-Yoku’ which is a Japanese term that translates to forest bathing and is often referred to as forest therapy.
For me, it involves taking slow contemplative walks through the forest to awaken all my senses mindfully.
As a result, these prints have been slow to evolve. As I walked through the woods and worked on each piece, I noticed the play of light.
Light is fluid. It travels in a straight line at twice the speed of sound. It can reflect off objects and refract through others. It interferes, disperses, diffracts, polarizes, and creates shadow. These changeable qualities are what makes light fluid.
Light also forms the biological basis of visual perception and was the first sense I engaged with. The human visual system is geared toward understanding, creating meaning and assigning value.
Human Beings can see the different hues of green in the forest because our eyes contain the long wavelength cones of both green and red, otherwise greens would be grays.
The first prints of this series reflect a response to the way I see. Layered with line and colour, these works portray different portals of sight. I am excited to see how new work will emerge as this series progresses.
